Wireless speakers: growing in popularity

Unlike conventional loudspeakers which use cables, wireless speakers use radio frequency (RF) waves to transmit the electrical signals that carry the sound information. A wireless speaker has a primary unit comprising the loudspeaker and an RF receiver, and also a secondary unit containing the transmitter of the radio frequency signals. An RCA plug is often used to connect the transmitter to the audio output of televisions or hi-fi equipment.

The receiver can be placed where you want to hear the sound, allowing you to move the speaker without using any cables. There is an amplifier in the receiver unit that amplifies the audio signals that needs electrical power from a source. Wireless speakers usually have a frequency of about 900 MHZ. The signal can pierce walls and can be transmitted over a range of 300 feet in radius. A tuning knob in these speakers can change the frequency to prevent likely interference with other wireless devices such as cordless phones.

Wireless speakers are available in various types catering to specific requirements. You can find stereo speakers for use inside the house and also wireless speakers designed especially for outdoor use. These wireless outdoor speakers come with a strong casing and their makers often claim that they are made of weatherproof materials. Some people complain that their audio quality often suffers because of radio frequency interferences with other wireless devices. But in spite of this drawback, these computer accessories continue to be highly popular among users with more models being introduced in the market.
